I agree that biking is dangerous and that when you have a kid it feels like you need to protect your life more than before you had one. Biking is 10x more deadly and 100x more likely to have an injury per mile than a car in current US conditions.

However, I just recently read that in Holland, where most people bike, 40% of all business travel is done by bike whereas in US it is only like 5% (presumably most of that done by bike messengers) so there is in theory a long way for the US in a bike nirvana world. With gas prices getting higher, hopefully we will go more in that direction.
