Hook turns for cyclists are a good way to avoid heavy traffic. But if the lights are already red waiting for the lights to change twice is just not practical and silly. Waiting in the middle of the road to turn right while motorvehicles pass you from both directions is also... pretty f**king dangerous. The sneaky practice of joining in with the pedestrians to cross the road and then taking off as the lights change should clearly be legalised.
