the great muppet cast that is upper managment here in brisbane has just informed us that as of next week, maybe the week after, we will no longer have radios.
everything will be done with one of the scanner gameboy units.
i've only worked once before with just a scanner and it was a fucking nightmare of constantly missed jobs, yo-yo behaviour, multiple return trips to where you just left to pick up stuff that wasn't there 5 minutes ago, and no ability to trade jobs out with each other if it made it quicker or easier.
so my questions to those of you in toll who are in sydney and melbourne, who we are reliably informed "have been using just scanners for years with no complaints", is just how bad is it going to be? and did you end up getting some form of radio back or are you stuck in gameboy hell forever?
how durable are these things? how waterproof? can you get internet or cable on them? these are important questions that have been answered up here with "how should i know? wait till we get them and then see".
also what the hell do you carry them in. the one they showed us was half the size of my head, and wouldn't fit in any pouch i own.
ah yes, toll planning and management...
fills me the same warm and fuzzy feelings poland has for hitlers birthday. damn them and their hourly wage for doing nothing slowly. if i wasn't so lazy and apathetic i'd look for a real job.
From what I saw of the toll
From what I saw of the toll machines, they're little PDAs, come in a waterproof housing which about doubles the size of them appropriately to something like a gameboy. They had a clippy thing which attaches the case to a strap, so no need for a pouch. Can't help on the internet/cable question.
I worked for mailcall in sydney and never got to use a radio so can't really make a comparison, but yes it does make for missing jobs, doubling back, not getting all the pickups you could etc when you just have a little computer gadget. Hope this was of some help
Toll in Melburn
DO NOT LET THEM LIE TO YOU!Yeah,we get our jobbies over groovy l'il data units, basically pocket PC's-BUT-they have NOT,I repeat NOT done away with radios! If they ever did,a mass riot would ensue-both from riders and despatch-for all the reasons you stated above!Actually,it's been great-full details in front of you without scrawling mad shorthandand and MUCH more free airtime for talking shit, organising handoffs, pig position reports etc!Oh yeah, they're also mobile phones and so long as we don't make international calls Toll down here don't give a fuck-guess they get cheap call rates!Internet, however is disabled-but they do take memory sticks-so you can download shit to them to show yr mates at work!
Lupine-DON"T LET THEM LIE TO YOU
RE:NO radios in Melburn-what a ridiculous concept-while it is
true that we get all our jobbies despatched over an XdaII pocket pc,we
still have radios-funnily enough for all the excellent reasons
you have stated in your original post!If they were ever to do
away with radios here it would cause chaos -'cos the info displayed on
the despatcher's screen doesn't give him/her nearly enough info
about yr exact location !The system as we have it here has been great-no
more beserk shorthand on soggy runsheets,ALL info on every job right
there in front of you AND more air time for organising hand offs, piggy
reportsand general crap talking! While internet is firmly disabled-we
are able to use them as our personal mobile phones(within reason-no
international!)and they do take memory sticks so you can down stuff
onto them to show yr mates at work>We now have these little metal
cases for them-so I just keep mine in my pocket with no worries
at all! Pocket pc for jobbies/radio for fleet
cohesion/morale-it'd get so damned lonely without
it!!!! Fixed before fashion-Pista usque ad

Payin the TOLL in SydneyTown
Heya TK. We don't got no damn radios here. It fuckin sux. There have been no complaints cos the fuckwits that know better don't listen to us. As for carrying the suckers, it's not that bad. The fine people at Skin Grows Back make a dandy lil' pouch to carry them in. Retails at around the $75 mark
Enjoy hell
PS while the data program is running most of the PDA features are overridden but after u turn off data you can access most pof them with a little exploration
Tried a day in Adelaide with the new pda's
Man did they suck!!! really noticed the difference between datas and two ways when the distance between drops got shorter In little old a town you tend to have a bit more work on than you do in Sydney.
What a bunch of cLInts. Double the fist!
