bottles and chainsPress Release – 12.02.2008

Bottles And Chains and the Dirt Devils Mountain Bike Club are excited to announce that 2008 will see the Australian Singlespeed Nationals mountain bike event coming to Tasmania for the first time ever. To be held over the weekend of April 19-20, the event is a celebration of single-geared bicycles, dirt trails and the people who ride them.
The 2008 Australian Singlespeed Nationals will feature a series of events and races over two days. Saturday April 19 will open the event with a casual BBQ and pub crawl, allowing interstate travellers to sample some of Tasmania’s fine hospitality. The evening will culminate at The Brisbane Hotel for a pre-race party featuring an open-entry bicycle roller race event, local bands, an outdoor 16” BMX race track and a mad basket of antics. The pre-race party will be open to everyone and is sure to be a wild evening of sweat, beer and bicycles.
The Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park will play host to the race itself on Sunday April 19. The park’s professionally built XC trail and 4X track will be the battle ground for the final points that could well decide the overall event winner.
However the 2008 Australian Singlespeed Nationals is a bike race where winning is less important than the people you meet and the good times had. Lycra-clad warriors are sparse in a field of costumed and cross-dressed misfits who love riding simply for the joy of it. Points will be accumulated by riders over the entire weekend and awarded not only for winning events, but also costumes, random antics and interesting equipment choices.
Singlespeed mountain biking is a unique approach to a fun and exciting sport, and there’s no greater celebration of one gear than the 2008 Australian Singlespeed Nationals.

That’s right folks, the 2008

That’s right folks, the 2008 Australian Singlespeed Nationals are on like Donkey Kong! The Devil’s Isle is the venue and Hobart is going to sweat beer for two days in April. It’s a weekend of bikes, BBQs, parties and debauchery. It’s all about having a good time, hanging out with a good bunch of people and getting a little loose for the weekend. You don’t need to be a race-warrior, you don’t need to own a singlespeed bike, and you sure as hell don’t need to take anything seriously. Sign up, throw down, join in and rock out.

You’ll be guaranteed to have a shitload of fun with a heap of good crew, there will be bands to keep it kicking, 16? BMX racing to test your skills, a ROLLER DERBY to get your legs spinning, spot prizes for best costume, nudity, loose antics and anything else we feel like.

We’ve even got a VOODOO singlespeed bike to give away to the winner (or who ever impresses us the most), thanks to Treadlies bike shop down in Kingston. Go and tell them how radical they are!
